Laura.

Nice post. I was able to attend TEDxEAST this weekend and John-Henry Harris from LEGO, spoke about the "Business of Play". Play is obviously something we have heard a great deal about since Pink's book yet it is still something most schools still have yet to really take seriously in our classrooms.

It's funny that you mention the sandbox, a few years ago I went through the same process out in California. Here is a picture of my sandbox: http://grab.by/4i5d.

The experience was equally liberating. We all must have our own personal sandboxes. Perhaps if each administrator had their own sandbox they may be able to see the value in making "play" an integral part of their curriculum.

Cheers and keep playing.

This is one of the most important topics of all: the importance of play to children, in learning. And this - your post - is brilliant. I too was blessed with a playful childhood.

I’m with Friedrich Froebel on this one:

"Play is the highest level of child development…It gives…joy, freedom, contentment, inner and outer rest, peace with the world…The plays of childhood are the germinal leaves of all later life."

Thanks for dropping by and commenting. I think Will was right when he said we'd "hit it off." ;-)

Look forward to more conversations over time. Please let me know if your travels bring you to Atlanta. Also, you might check out the TEDxBloomington event I'm involved with. The theme is Wisdom of Play, and it's being curated by my good friend and colleague Christian Long. http://www.tedxbloomington.com/

A certain amount of care or pain or trouble is necessary for every man at all times .A ship without ballast is unstable and will not go straight. Do you understand?
